I’m 18 and have been holding my pen incorrectly my entire life. I have tried multiple times to correct it but always found my handwriting to become sloppy and as well as time crunches and exams it was difficult to correct it. Because of the way I hold my pen I have lots of pain in my wrist, fingers and even lower parts of my arm. Despite my handwriting being pretty neat despite my incorrect holding, I’m going to give this a go because I simply cannot put up with the pain anymore. Thank you for the insight. Sorry for my poor English.
Oh my goodness! Is holding a pen this stupid simple? You instantly relieved the uneasiness and rigidity that I experience when writing (which made me dread it). You have spectacularly captured the mechanics of pen holding. Thanks a Million, Ma'am.
in my opinion, the pen hold depends on the type of pen you're using, because the pen itself makes you hold it in such a way that you could easily slide it against the page. so if you're using a fountain pen you won't be able to press it hard against the page and your movement will begin in your forearm while if you're using a ball pen you will tend to move fingers rather than forearm
I'm 41 and I still hold my pen incorrectly. Not that it's something of crucial importance, but I got into a bad habit ages ago and now it's way too late to change my grip.
Hello, I'm attempting to learn spencerian handwritting and the problem I was struggling with since the beginning, was that my thumb limited my movement, but with this technique I've found that the movement is more fluent and natural. Thank you very much.
Bad handwriting all my life-very embarrassing. I practiced this method and it clicks! Thank you for so much valuable information, and for your concise presentation.
Thank you for posting this up! I've been having to research & adjust my pen hold because of how much it hurts my carpal tunnel to write. I've already switched to fountain pens to help alleviate the stress on my hands, so I'm going to try this and see if it helps! Nice Lamy Safari fountain pen by the way. :)
I've done things to try and improve my handwriting, from fountain pens to using my wrist to even involving my arms but those didn't seem to help me at all. I'm glad I came across this particular video I gave this approach a shot and it did seem to help little by little. Sure, it may take some getting used to but I believe I am now a few steps closer to having a handwriting I can be proud of. Thank you for your explanations, it is appreciated a whole lot.
Thank you, ma'm. I always have problems trying to hold a pen in a painless and comfortably way. It has a wide range of movement and now I can achieve the letters form easily.
Wow I am trying to improve my handwriting by holding the pen correctly and already it started to improve. Is this the tripod grip what everyone is going on about?
Thank you! I messed up my middle finger's nailbed because of the way I hold my pen, and recently the very end/root? part of the side of my nail got exposed. Just when we had tons of writing homework, so thanks for this!!!
My writing is very clean and i get compliments from teachers and students alike about them but i realized due to my pen grip i tend to tire out my hand faster then my peers. I also realized i grip my pen very tightly and is very foreful when writing
Thank You so much! I have never learned how to hold pen correctly and this has helped me so much! Now I don't have to spy on how others hold pens and then get embarrassed after they notice me. First time saying something is underrated. You got a sub from me right there.
Sonu Shafi also says the back of the hand faces up and the movement comes from the arm mainly, not the fingers... the fingers are used in a combined movement of the shoulder, forearm and fingers, not on their own.
This is how I always hold the pen and in my school years I was always the "weird one" for not holding it like everyone else. At least now I know who was right...
That's from pressure caused by needing to press down because of crappy pens/pencils/paper. Almost no pressure is needed if you're using decent quality stuff.
This is direct contradiction to the Palmer method that was called Business writing and was meant to be done with the arm movement rather that the hand muscles in the fingers which easily get tired. Donald Thurber who developed his own method of handwriting called D'Nealian writing stressed the importance of not holding the pen too firmly and came up with an alternative to the popular tripod grip to avoid too much control by the fingers and allowing the muscles to relax by holding the writing implement between the index & middle finger (i.e. the second finger).
Ive been writing with the pen between my index finger and middle finger on the entirety of my life, im trying to change this in hope of improving my calligraphy and to reduce strain to my fingers.
is it possible to use this grip and have proper spencerian penmanship? i'm asking because the theory book i have says that only the third and fourth finger's nails are allowed to lightly touch the paper. :/
You can, however I would use larger arm movements and put less stress on the small hand muscles and use the large arm muscles so you can write for a longer period of time without cramping. Spencerian is essentially pressure down no pressure up.
This is my current frustration with the Spencerian theory book! The grip suggested is not easy to maintain and I am wondering if I will be able to write eventually using the Spencerian grip...
I've been searching on Palmer method and business penmanship and literally every source I found said that we need to practice to NOT use the fingers too much. That the goal is to use a whole arm movement. I've been finding out that a mix of hand and arm movement is working best, specially for smaller letters, but now you come and say we are supposed to write with fingers and NO hand? I got the early part of using the finger for up and down movement, which is also taught on some of the others, but always WITH the arm/hand movement. I god MORE confused now.
I used to naturally hold my pen like this.. But everyone said im doing it wrong.. They all keep the thumb n index together and the pen rests on the fleshy part and not in the knuckle
TheSgyro everyone who said that is wrong. Thumb and index together gives a mechanically unstable grip. Try a small experiment. Hold with thumb and index together, and use your other hand to move the back end of the pen about. Easy! No matter how hard you squeeze on the pen, it still flops about. Now try the same thing holding the pen as Barbara does. Not so easy, is it? It doesn’t take much force for the thumb to keep the pen in place.
Other handwriting pros {and I do mean professionals!} on youtube say the EXACT opposite, that we should form the letters with arm motion, and if we give the fingers more than one task they will fail at both. You're obviously both "correct" because you both write beautifully, but how do I figure out which way is more correct for me? {& yes, I've tried them both. But I already learned to write in a way that turned out to be non-ideal once, I'd rather not do it again!}
The palmer method suggests that you shouldn't be using the fingers at all to get the best handwriting and not to tire your hands. What are your thoughts?
I wish everyone that has a planner or Journaling video would watch this. I literally cannot watch a video of someone holding their pen or pencil, even a paintbrush, like a toddler. It actually makes me anxious.
